چکیده

Changes in the physical landscape of SE Raasay at end last Quaternary glaciation are examined. The area is marked by a major fault system defining Beinn na Leac Fault Block, and field survey shows this to comprise rollover anticline SW, with extensional movement towards NE along an oblique transfer fault, Main Fault. was reactivated after Last Glacial Maximum. Survey distinctive ridge detached scree it have involved single least 7.12 m vertical displacement, arguably greatest since before Younger Dryas Scotland. present work confirms that became during Dryas, but finds overlies lacustrine deposit 5.6 laminated sediments from lake which had begun accumulate earlier. Radiocarbon dating peat overlying gave 10 176–10 315 cal years BP, morphological stratigraphical evidence indicates drainage occurred earlier only shortly scree. Possible causes displacement briefly discussed.

The Hebrides

The papar names in the Western Isles are restricted to the north Hebrides. The reasons for this distinction between north and south Hebrides have already been speculated on above (3.2. Situation in the Hebrides; also in Crawford, 2005, 94). Is it a reflection of the different toponymic (place-name) pattern in the two areas? Or has it something to do with the pre-Norse political /ecclesiastical ...

Blood Pressures in Three New Hebrides Communities.

There has been increasing interest in the normal blood pressures of isolated and unsophisticated communities in the last few years. In particular, several investigators have questioned whether the rise in blood pressure with increasing age which appears to be common to all "Western" peoples is universal for mankind, and they have suggested that this rise is due to the occurrence among Westerner...

Deglaciation explains bat extinction in the Caribbean

Ecological factors such as changing climate on land and interspecific competition have been debated as possible causes of postglacial Caribbean extinction. These hypotheses, however, have not been tested against a null model of climate-driven postglacial area loss. Here, we use a new Quaternary mammal database and deep-sea bathymetry to estimate species-area relationships (SARs) at present and ...

Colonization of the Scottish islands via long-distance Neolithic transport of red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) have played a key role in human societies throughout history, with important cultural significance and as a source of food and materials. This relationship can be traced back to the earliest human cultures and continues to the present day. Humans are thought to be responsible for the movement of a considerable number of deer throughout history, although the majority of...
